French ports could usefully supplement the larger ports of Belgium and the Netherlands; or, if these were mined or otherwise disabled, could help to substitute for them. Use of sealift to resupply NATO forces would be necessary for all but the briefest conventional contingencies in Central Europe, because airlift resources are inadequate for supplies beyond the most urgent requirements.

An indication of the capacity of France's major ports is provided by Table 4 below, while their locations are shown on Map 10.162 Marseilles and Le Havre are the main ones, with the bulk of their shipping represented by oil. Despite its distance from Germany, Marseilles handled more US cargo than any other European port during World War II, partly because of the extensive use Britain made of Antwerp.163
